The Journey

On a road trip in 2018, I kept on stumbling upon historic markers for the Lewis and Clark Trail. I kept imagining the two men battling rapids by canoe, traveling through the glorious and varied landscapes I found myself in. By the time I got to Pompey’s Pillar in Montana, I immediately bought The Journals of Lewis and Clark and started researching a novel. To the Western Ocean, will embody the conflict of humanity’s struggle against nature, and perhaps more importantly, tackle the concept of people vs. human nature, to remind my readers that it’s easy to act in your own best interest, but it’s important to look at our actions on a broader scale. From May to September 2021, I biked the Lewis and Clark Trail to continue to research it.
